Chapter Nine

Hannah burst into the hospital room, her dark russet auburn hair a disarray of soft curls. She skidded to a stop with a swish of her long emerald green dress, ran her gaze over Nate, then launched herself at me.

“Oh my God, Madeline.”

I patted her back and wriggled in her embrace. “You’re suffocating me.”

“Sorry.” Hannah let go and sat on the edge of the bed. “What happened?”

“Ah.”

“She stepped between a snake and your dog, Bosco,” Nate supplied.

Hannah swung her head in Nate’s direction. “And you are?”

“The guy who saved your sister from your dog.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hannah stood.

Nate folded his arms. “It means your dog is a menace and needs serious training.”

“Now wait just a minute.” Hannah waved her hands in the air. “Who are you?”

“All right, you two stop it,” I scolded, then rolled my eyes. Anyone would think they were children with how they were behaving. “I’m fine. No reason to get worked up.”

Nate tapped his fingers on his folded biceps. My gaze slid to the tattoo his fingers touched. I’d like to trace the lines of his tattoo with my finger or lips and ask him about it.

“But…” I tugged Hannah back onto the bed. “Nate’s right, Bosco needs training.”

Hannah threw up her hands. “I’ve tried, believe me. He won’t do anything.”

Nate unfolded his arms and released the tension from his shoulders. “One of my friends is a dog trainer. I can give you his number if you like.”

“Yes, please.” Hannah smiled for the first time since coming into the room. “Nate, is it?”

He stood and offered his hand. “Nate Hudson, nice to meet you.”

Hannah shook his hand. “How do you know my sister?”

The nurse entered the room and scowled.

“You’re such a comedian, Hannah.” I pushed her shoulder. “You know Nate, my husband.”

Hannah’s eyes bulged. I eyeballed the nurse. Hannah’s face lit with understanding.

“I’m checking the snake bite didn’t affect your head,” Hannah jumped to the rescue.

Nate brushed my hair back from my face. “There’s nothing wrong with Maddy’s head. It’s beautiful.”

Hannah mouthed, Who is he?

I ignored her and asked the nurse, “Are the last blood test results back?”

“Yes, all clear again. We won’t need to do another blood test for six hours now.”

“Good. I’m like a pin cushion.”

The nurse’s lips thinned. Could she have any less of a bedside manner? What’s the harm in making a few jokes when in the hospital? It sure lightened the gravity of the situation.

“I’ll stick pins in you.” Hannah nudged my arm. “Then next time you won’t step in front of a snake.”

“But Bosco.”

“I love Bosco, but you’re my sister, and I love you more.”

“Love you too, Freckles.”

“Hey, my freckles are almost nonexistent now.”

“I can see one here.” I pointed to her nose. “And one here.” I pointed to her forehead and tapped my finger against it.

“Knock it off, Ginga Ninja.” She swatted my hand. “You should rest.”

I held up my hands. Nate chuckled at our antics. Garry used to tell us to grow up when we teased each other.
